The City of Cape Town has announced significant infrastructure upgrades that will temporarily disrupt the electricity supply to certain areas.
From Friday, 24 January, the electricity supply will be impacted in Observatory, Salt River, and parts of Woodstock as essential work is carried out by the Electricity Generation and Distribution Department.
When Will the Power Outage Happen?
The scheduled power outage will begin at 8:00 PM on Friday, 24 January, and is expected to last until 8:00 AM the following morning, Saturday, 25 January.
However, if the weather conditions are unfavorable, the work will be postponed, with an alternative date set for Friday, 7 February, at the same time.
During this planned outage, residents within the affected areas – Observatory, Salt River, and parts of Woodstock – will experience a complete power cut.
While the City estimates that power should be restored within the specified timeframe, unexpected issues may lead to delays, so residents are advised to be prepared for a longer disruption.
How to Prepare for the Power Outage?
To minimize the risk of damage to electronic devices, residents are urged to switch off all appliances and electronics at the wall before the outage begins.
Sensitive devices such as computers and televisions should be unplugged for extra protection.
Additionally, it’s important to remember that during a power outage, all electrical installations should be treated as live.
As an added safety measure, it’s advised to avoid using candles, as they pose a fire risk. Instead, opt for battery-powered lanterns or flashlights.
Food Safety Tips During the Outage
Residents are also reminded to consider food safety during the power outage.
To keep perishable foods like dairy, meat, and seafood cold, use a cooler with ice or frozen gel packs if possible.
If the outage lasts for more than four hours, any perishable food that has been at room temperature should be discarded.
Minimizing the number of times the refrigerator and freezer doors are opened can help maintain a cold temperature inside.
