Just hours after parting ways with former Kaizer Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral, Cape Town City FC has swiftly made a new appointment by bringing in an ex-Orlando Pirates head coach to strengthen their coaching set-up.
Ertugral’s Departure After Disappointing Run of Results
Cape Town City announced the departure of Ertugral on Monday following a series of poor performances in the ongoing 2024/25 Betway Premiership.
The 65-year-old coach, who had joined the team as an interim replacement for Eric Tinkler in January, failed to turn the team’s fortunes around.
Initially appointed as technical director, Ertugral was given the head coach role but didn’t last long in that position.
A Disheartening Winless Streak
Ertugral’s exit followed Cape Town City’s recent 1-0 loss to Marumo Gallants in the league, marking their ninth consecutive match without a win. Their last victory came back in mid-January against Richards Bay.
Since Ertugral’s arrival, the team has won just three games, drawn three, and suffered eight losses across all competitions.
Currently, they sit 13th in the standings with 23 points from 23 matches, a concerning record that shows six wins, five draws, and a joint-high 12 losses.
Their goal-scoring struggles are also evident, with just 13 goals scored and 27 conceded in those 23 matches.
Peral Takes the Helm Until Season’s End
In response to the dismal season so far, Cape Town City has turned to Diogo Peral to take charge of the team for the remainder of the season.
Peral, along with assistant coaches Lebogang Manyama and Roger De Sa, will try to steer the club toward a more positive end to the campaign.
Peral and Manyama have been part of the coaching team for a while, while De Sa, who has extensive experience with clubs like Orlando Pirates, Wits, and the Qatar national team, returns to the South African football scene after a stint abroad.
Next Match for Cape Town City FC
Cape Town City’s next challenge comes after the upcoming FIFA break, when they’ll face SuperSport United in Polokwane on Sunday, March 30, at 17:30.
The pressure is on for the team to recover from their recent slump and avoid the threat of relegation as the season progresses.
