A California family’s emotional turmoil has taken a legal turn after their daughter, Taylor Starling, lost her spot on the varsity cross-country team to a transgender athlete.
Taylor’s father, Ryan Starling, has publicly claimed that the situation has caused significant distress within their family.
He has now launched legal proceedings against the Riverside Unified School District (RUSD) over the issue, alleging that the decision was unfair and discriminatory.
Parents Speak Out Against the Decision
The controversy has also drawn the attention of other parents at Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, where Taylor and the transgender athlete attended.
Multiple parents have voiced their frustration, particularly at the claim that the transgender student was allowed to compete despite missing numerous practices due to academic commitments.
Ryan Starling spoke to Fox News, expressing disbelief that any athlete could miss 75% of practices yet still be allowed to compete at such a high level.
Fellow parent, Dan Slavin, whose daughter also competed on the team, shared his dissatisfaction, calling the decision “not fair and not right.”
Alleged Comments From School Administrators Fuel the Dispute
Adding fuel to the fire, Ryan Starling alleges that when Taylor and other team members raised their concerns with school administrators, they were met with the claim that “transgenders have more rights than cisgenders.”
He further accused the Title IX coordinator at RUSD of stating that cisgender girls did not have the same rights as transgender girls.
These alleged comments have intensified the debate surrounding the issue and led to increasing tensions among parents and students.
The “Save Girls’ Sports” Movement Grows Stronger
The situation escalated when Taylor and her teammate, Kaitlyn Slavin, wore t-shirts to school in November bearing the slogan “Save Girls’ Sports.”
The shirts quickly became a symbol of their protest. However, the high school allegedly confronted the girls, with some reports claiming that the t-shirts were compared to swastikas.
This sparked a wave of similar protests across the student body, with over 400 students reportedly wearing the shirts in solidarity.
In response, the school attempted to address the issue by altering the dress code and issuing detentions, but the efforts ultimately failed as the movement gained momentum.
A Victory on the Track Amidst the Controversy
Despite the ongoing protests, Taylor’s persistence paid off when she secured her place back on the varsity team.
In a recent competition, Taylor outpaced the transgender athlete by nearly three seconds, winning her spot back and bringing joy to her family.
However, the matter remains contentious, as transgender activists have been vocal in their opposition to the actions of Taylor and Kaitlyn.
Protestors gathered outside an RUSD school board meeting on December 19, further fueling the debate.
National and State-Level Tensions Surrounding Transgender Athletes
The controversy at Martin Luther King High School is part of a larger national debate over transgender athletes’ participation in women’s sports.
Incoming President Donald Trump has promised to implement a ban on transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, and the House of Representatives is considering revisions to Title IX that would only allow athletes to compete in the gender category they were assigned at birth.
In contrast, California Governor Gavin Newsom has vowed to resist these changes, pledging to uphold the rights of transgender students in the state.
RUSD Defends Its Position
In a statement to Fox News, Riverside Unified School District defended its actions, stating that while the rules around transgender athletes were not created by the district, it is committed to following the law and complying with CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) regulations.
The district emphasized that California state law prohibits discrimination based on gender, gender identity, and gender expression, including in physical education and athletics.
RUSD asserted that its policies align with both the law and its core values of equity and well-being for all students.
The battle at Martin Luther King High School shows no signs of resolving soon, as legal proceedings continue, and tensions between different sides of the issue remain high.
