A British holidaymaker tragically lost his life after being swept into the sea by a wave while visiting a famous natural rock pool in Tenerife.
The 63-year-old man was one of three people caught in a dangerous situation at the Los Gigantes natural swimming pool on the island’s western coast.
Rescue Operation and Medical Efforts
As soon as the alarm was raised, emergency services sprang into action.
A rescue helicopter was dispatched, and police, firefighters, and medical teams worked together to respond to the crisis.
When rescuers found the man, he was lying face-down in the water.
He was quickly airlifted to a nearby football field, but despite efforts to revive him, the man was confirmed dead after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Survivors’ Condition
Fortunately, the two other individuals swept into the sea—a pair of women—managed to make their way to safety on their own.
One woman sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby health center for treatment, while the other experienced a panic attack but did not require hospital care.
Details of the Incident
The tragedy occurred just before midday near the popular Crab Island Pool, also known as the Los Gigantes natural pool, close to the Barcelo Santiago Hotel in the municipality of Santiago del Teide.
Although the pool is protected by a concrete wall, online travel advisories have long warned visitors to stay out during high ocean waves, which can be hazardous.
Local Authorities’ Advice and Warnings
In light of the strong swells and rough waves that have been affecting the Canary Islands this week, local officials have been urging extra caution around the coastline.
Emergency responders confirmed that the man’s death was the result of the large wave, and they continue to investigate the incident further.
While the identities of the victims and their relationship to one another remain unclear, the regional emergency response team has expressed their condolences to those affected.
