BrewDog’s co-founder, James Watt, is shaking things up in the world of business reality TV.
Frustrated by what he sees as outdated and unflattering portrayals of entrepreneurs on shows like Dragons’ Den and The Apprentice, the 42-year-old business mogul has announced his own rival series, House of Unicorns.
Watt promises a more modern, founder-friendly approach that celebrates innovation and ambition, with the highest prize ever seen on UK business television.
House of Unicorns: A Fresh Take on Business Reality TV
Watt’s new show, House of Unicorns, will feature ten promising startup companies competing over six weeks for a staggering £2 million cash prize—marking the largest in UK history.
Of that, £1 million will come from Watt himself, while the other £1 million is backed by Founders Capital, Europe’s largest founder-investor community.
In addition to the prize money, viewers will play an active role by voting for the top three startups to share £1 million.
They can also invest in the winning businesses directly, starting with as little as £10.
Watt will personally decide which companies receive the remaining million, aiming to spotlight ventures with disruptive potential and big ideas.
Unicorn Startups and Big Investments
In business, a “unicorn” refers to a privately held startup valued at over $1 billion.
These companies often bring groundbreaking innovations, disrupt markets, and introduce new trends.
Watt, whose net worth exceeds £250 million, sees House of Unicorns as an opportunity to invest in the next wave of transformative companies while inspiring a new generation of entrepreneurs.
He criticized existing formats like Dragons’ Den for offering limited support to contestants, saying, “More than half the deals on Dragons’ Den don’t even go through.
The best investment is typically £50,000, which doesn’t make much difference to a business. We wanted to offer something far more impactful.”
A Show That Puts Founders First
Unlike traditional business shows that Watt claims portray entrepreneurs as “deranged, delusional, and crazy,” House of Unicorns will focus on highlighting their talent, vision, and resilience.
He aims to show the business world in a positive light, saying the series will be “massively founder-friendly and business-focused.”
This fresh perspective isn’t just about the competition; it’s also a reflection of Watt’s passion for supporting business leaders.
“I love helping founders,” he explained, emphasizing that the show’s mission is to create meaningful opportunities for startups.
Tackling Challenges for UK Entrepreneurs
Watt also used the announcement to express concerns about the state of entrepreneurship in the UK.
He believes government policies, including Labour’s Autumn budget, have created a hostile environment for businesses, discouraging innovation and driving entrepreneurs out of the country.
“The current government makes it so hard to start a business.
We’re heading into a recession, and many entrepreneurs and millionaires are leaving the UK,” he said.
Watt hopes House of Unicorns will help kickstart economic recovery by fostering a new generation of high-tax-paying entrepreneurs to replace those who have left.
Star-Studded Mentorship
The show will feature three high-profile, household-name mentors who will guide the contestants throughout the competition.
While Watt hasn’t revealed their identities, he promises they are incredibly successful figures in the business world.
As for his fiancée, Georgia Toffolo, better known as “Toff,” Watt confirmed that while she won’t be one of the mentors, she will make occasional appearances on the show to share her business insights.
James Watt’s Controversial Views on Work-Life Balance
Watt has recently faced backlash over comments he made about work-life balance, calling it a concept for “people who hate the work that they do.”
Instead, he advocates for “work-life integration,” combining professional and personal life seamlessly.
While his remarks sparked criticism online, Watt stood firm, encouraging people to find careers they are passionate about.
“If someone hates their job, they have the ability to change it.
Everyone has free will and agency,” he said.
Changing the Narrative of Business Television
With House of Unicorns, James Watt aims to create a show that not only entertains but also inspires.
By offering meaningful investments and mentorship, the series seeks to redefine how entrepreneurs are perceived and supported.
As Watt puts it, “You can be entertaining without it being at the expense of business.”
For entrepreneurs across the UK, House of Unicorns might just be the start of something revolutionary.
