Bomb shelter babies: Pregnant moms forced to give birth underground

Images of Ukrainian babies entering the world in basements and bomb shelters amid the Russian invasion of Kiev, in Ukraine, has flooded social media and now new images showing expecting mothers waiting to give birth and orphans huddled together in a basement, is adding to the global outrage.

Over the past week, Ukrainians and refugees from across the world have been desperately trying to leave the war-crippled Ukraine while many pregnant mothers about to give birth had no choice but to take shelter in metro stations, basements and bomb shelters, many even giving birth there.

Former Ukrainian MP Hanna Hopko took to Twitter and shared an image of a newborn baby wrapped in blankets, while onlookers are visible in the background. According to the Guardian, Hopko, the chair of Democracy in Action Conference, said baby Mia was born in the shelter in a “stressful environment”.

She added that despite the challenging experience, Mia’s mother was happy.

Another Ukrainian MP, Anastasia Radina, also took to social media to share her concern for the circumstances in which these babies are born into the world.

“Ukrainian mothers are now giving birth in shelters and metro stations during air raids,” she wrote on Twitter.

The New York Post also reported of a baby being born in the maternity ward of the basement of Starobilsk Multidisciplinary Hospital in Luhansk. The hospital shared the image of the baby on social media.

Today reported that Ukrainian Minsiter of Health Viktor Liashko shared photos of two more children born in a bomb shelter in Kherson, Ukraine. Liashko called the images the “face of war” on his Facebook page.

“Yesterday in Kherson, under the shelling, two boys were born…Two new lives that already have war in their genetic code,” he wrote.

Liashko wrote that although the babies were born under “shelling and explosions”, the healthy birth of the newborns births should serve as a symbol of Ukrainian resilience.

“Life goes on, we give birth to children and no one can defeat us!” he wrote.

Images of Ukrainian expectant mothers and pregnant immigrants waiting to give birth has since also start trickling in on social media. Hospitals in Kyiv have converted hospital basements into emergency bomb shelter. MailOnline reports that groups of up to six women are sharing rooms, and in some cases beds, as they wait to give birth or rest after delivering their babies.

Another heartbreaking image circulating, is that of orphans from the city of Kropyvnytskyi, who is taking shelter. In an image shared by the National Guard of Ukraine the children can be seen huddling together. MailOnline reports that many of the children are sick.
