The official Twitter account for the dystopian series Black Mirror recently broke three years of silence by posting a cryptic tweet and new trailer, featuring a flurry of famous faces, many of whom are shown in various states of horror and surprise.
As a show heavily influenced by current events and pop culture, it is likely that the upcoming season will reflect the pandemic and the political turbulence that has occurred in the UK and the US over the past few years.
Each episode of the self-contained series is a unique story, though Easter eggs that connect various episodes suggest they all exist within the same universe.
The trailer features sound effects of distorted dial-up connections and violent scenes, such as one woman smashing another’s head through a glass display case.
Different time periods and styles will likely be showcased, ranging from futuristic settings to vintage clothing from the 60s and 70s, and production values seem to have increased with a more glitzy feel depicted in the trailer.
The show is known for featuring both American and British actors and the lengthy cast list for the upcoming season includes Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Zazie Beetz (Joker), Salma Hayek Pinault (From Dusk Till Dawn, Frida), Kate Mara (Call Jane), Josh Hartnett (Penny Dreadful), Samuel Blenkin (The Witcher: Blood Origin), Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You), Anjana Vasan (We Are Lady Parts), and Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek).
The trailer ends with a title card for Season 6 and a release date in June 2023, just a few weeks away.
The previous season aired on June 5, and the upcoming season’s release date falls exactly three years after it.
