Billy Porter has opened up about a touching act of kindness from Prince William that left him feeling truly cared for.
The 56-year-old actor and singer, known for his Tony-winning performances and his role on Pose, revealed that the Prince of Wales sent him a get-well card while he was recovering from a serious bout of sepsis.
“It’s the kind of human being he is,” Porter told Hello!, reflecting on the gesture.
“His kindness and his presence have no bounds.”
A Health Scare That Shook Broadway
Earlier this year, Porter faced a life-threatening health crisis when he was hospitalized with sepsis, forcing him to withdraw from his Broadway revival of Cabaret, where he starred as the Emcee.
His doctors assured fans that he would make a full recovery but emphasized the importance of rest during his recuperation.
ATG Productions producer Adam Speers praised Porter’s contributions, calling him “an extraordinary Emcee” and noting that his signature talent and passion left a lasting mark on the production.
Sharing the Stage Amid Recovery
Porter had been slated to perform until October 19, but his early exit meant the show closed ahead of schedule.
For the final performances, his role was shared by longtime alternates Marty Lauter and David Merino, while Marisha Wallace, who joined the cast in July after performing alongside Porter in London, stayed with the production until closing on September 21 after 592 regular performances.
Remembering Sepsis and Its Dangers
Sepsis is a severe, life-threatening response to infection that can lead to organ failure or septic shock if not treated promptly.
Early warning signs include fever, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, and confusion.
The condition is particularly dangerous for individuals with weakened immune systems or other underlying health concerns.
Porter’s swift hospitalization and treatment underscore the seriousness of the illness.
Porter’s Personal Journey With Health Challenges
Porter has been open about living with HIV since 2007, sharing that year as one of the hardest of his life.
He was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and faced financial difficulties alongside his HIV diagnosis.
Growing up in a strict Pentecostal household, he initially felt shame surrounding his condition.
Speaking publicly about his experiences, he said, “Speaking the truth has been healing.” His courage has resonated with fans and highlighted the importance of honesty and self-acceptance.
A Celebrated Career and Enduring Impact
Over the years, Billy Porter has earned an Emmy, a Grammy, a Tony, and even a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Beyond awards, he has been a trailblazer on stage and screen, inspiring audiences with his performances and his openness about life’s challenges.
From his Broadway triumphs to his heartfelt advocacy, Porter continues to demonstrate resilience, talent, and an unwavering commitment to living authentically.
