Strictly Come Dancing is back in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons after a male star linked to the show was arrested on suspicion of rape and non-consensual intimate image abuse.
While the news has caused shockwaves, BBC sources have reassured fans that the allegations do not involve anyone participating in this year’s series, and the show is expected to continue as planned.
Police Investigation Underway
The Met Police confirmed the arrest, saying the alleged victim is being supported by specialist officers. A spokesman explained:
“On Friday, August 22, officers arrested a man on suspicion of rape and non-consensual intimate image abuse.
This is a joint investigation with Hertfordshire Constabulary.
While the investigation is in its early stages, we urge anyone with any information to come forward to us.”
The allegations arose from a third-party report of sexual and drug-related offences, and enquiries are ongoing.
BBC representatives emphasized that it would not be appropriate to comment on the police investigation and confirmed there is no evidence linking the case to the current Strictly production.
A History of Scandals
Strictly has faced multiple controversies in recent years.
In the previous series, 53-year-old Wynne Evans was accused of inappropriate behaviour after allegedly making a sexual remark at a press event.
He denied the claim but was later sacked by the BBC.
In 2023, actress Amanda Abbington accused professional dancer Giovanni Pernice of being “unnecessary, abusive, cruel and mean.”
While most allegations were cleared, some complaints of verbal bullying and harassment were upheld.
Former Love Island contestant Zara McDermott also spoke out about a distressing encounter with Graziano Di Prima, who admitted to kicking her and was subsequently removed from the show.
Drug and Alcohol Allegations
The show has also been embroiled in claims that two of its stars used cocaine during filming.
One of the performers was also suspected of drinking while on set.
According to reports, these allegations were highlighted in a legal submission to the BBC by law firm Russells on behalf of Wynne Evans in March.
A BBC spokesperson said: “We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint.
We encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate to comment further.”
BBC Offers Support to Involved Stars
The broadcaster is reportedly offering professional support to the two stars implicated in the drug allegations. A source told The Sun:
“The BBC is taking the allegations really seriously.
Bosses are aware of the two stars in question and have a duty of care to make sure they’re okay.
As per BBC policy, the option of specialised professional support is on the table and will be offered.”
While drug testing won’t occur on the main show, bosses are reportedly considering random checks for next year’s tour to ensure compliance with the law.
The investigation’s outcome will determine any further action.
Fans Reassured as Show Continues
Despite the ongoing scrutiny, BBC insiders are confident that Strictly Come Dancing, including its training sessions and upcoming episodes, can proceed without disruption.
Meanwhile, the public and media continue to watch closely as the investigation unfolds.
