Authorities accused of botching woman’s autopsy to “cover up the killer”

Monday, in response to the murder of a young woman in Mexico City, police in a nearby state were accused of purposely botching her autopsy to cover up the murderer.

The death of 27-year-old Ariadna López brought up all the issues that have infuriated women in Mexico: politicians blaming the victim, inadequate police investigation, and misconduct that has contributed to an increase in the number of unsolved slayings of women.

Claudia Sheinbaum, the mayor of Mexico City, asserted that the prosecutor of Morelos state, immediately south of the capital, had ties to the woman’s suspected assailant, but she declined to specify their supposed connections.

In Mexico City, Mexico, on November 7, 2022, protesters demand justice for the death of Ariadna Fernanda Lopez, a 27-year-old woman who was discovered dead on a highway in the state of Morelos. The RAQUEL CUNHA / REUTERS image was provided by RAQUEL CUNHA / REUTERS.

Sheinbaum stated, “It is evident that the prosecutor of Morelos state attempted to shield the killer of a woman due to his ties to the killer.”

The woman’s body was discovered in Morelos last week, so investigators there originally conducted an investigation.

A state forensic examination, according to Morelos state prosecutor Uriel Carmona, revealed that López choked on her own vomit as a result of drinking. Sunday, however, officials in Mexico City stated they had evidence she was murdered in the capital.

Carmona “categorically” denied the claims and stated they “without any basis,” according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office.

Monday evening, the Morelos state anti-corruption agency said that it had launched an investigation into “potential crimes” and “reported acts of corruption committed by workers of the Morelos state attorney’s office.”

Prosecutor Ernestina Godoy of Mexico City stated on Sunday that a second autopsy conducted by Mexico City professionals revealed “many lesions produced by blows” on López’s body and classified “several traumas” as the cause of death.

López was discovered dead on the side of a road in Morelos state, which is home to Cuernavaca, a popular weekend retreat for inhabitants of Mexico City. Mexico City authorities stated that she had vanished after visiting a restaurant with the suspect and his girlfriend and then his apartment.

On Monday, Sheinbaum displayed a claimed image from the apartment building’s surveillance cameras showing the suspect strolling via a basement garage while carrying the lifeless body of a woman.

On Monday, the suspect, who was presumably a friend of the victim, surrendered to prosecutors in the northern city of Monterrey and asserted his innocence. In Mexico City, another woman, described as the suspect’s girlfriend, was detained.

Some suspected police incompetence from the beginning. On October 30th, López vanished from a posh central Mexico City area. Her body was not discovered until many days later, when cyclists spotted it on a path from Mexico City to Morelos.

Only because the riders took images of the victim’s tattoos and put them online in an attempt to identify her were her relatives able to identify her body.

On Monday, dozens of women and their allies demonstrated in Mexico City to seek justice for López.

Omar Rodrguez Daz, the victim’s brother, stated, “We feel indignant, helpless, and, above all, furious.” It’s unfortunate that they treat us like garbage.

“We want prosecutor Uriel Carmona to suffer the repercussions of his statements. He made fun of Mexico and women in general “Rodríguez Díaz said.

Sheinbaum is considered a leading contender to replace President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in 2024 elections. The dispute on Monday creates a problem with the governor of the state of Morelos, who is an ally of López Obrador but is not a member of his Morena party.

Mexico City has its own issues with the murder of women. Wednesday, Lidia Gabriela supposedly hurled herself from a taxi and died on a roadway in Mexico City. According to witnesses, Gabriela believed the taxi driver was attempting to kidnap her, so she jumped from the vehicle.

Morelos state has likewise seen an especially violent period of women’s murders.

Five women’s bodies were discovered on Friday in the Morelos city of Cuautla, just south of Mexico City. The dead were discovered in two locations in the city that are popular weekend getaways for Mexico City residents.

The prosecutor in the state of Morelos stated that the homicides looked to have been committed by a drug gang, maybe as part of a dispute. Carmona stated that the remains were discovered close to a hand-lettered drug gang sign.

Official statistics reveal that 695 women were murdered in Mexico between January and September, compared to 978 for the entirety of 2021. The vast majority of these offenses remained unpunished.

A 46-year-old lady who was searching for her missing son was fatally shot outside her home in the northern state of Guanajuato on Monday, according to the local prosecutor’s office.

Maria Carmela Vazquez was the most recent member of the missing’s family to be murdered.

Her mother told local reporters that “two young males” had inquired for her daughter by knocking on the door. “When she emerged, they executed her.”

In May, Lopez Obrador visited with the family of Debanhi Escobar, 18, whose body was discovered in a motel water tank 12 days after she went missing. A national public outrage ensued after an independent forensic examination revealed that she was raped and killed prior to her death.
