Aston Villa Eyes Marco Asensio for Potential Loan Move Before January Transfer Window Closes in Hopes of Strengthening Their Attack

Aston Villa could be closing in on a move for Marco Asensio as Unai Emery looks to add to his squad before the transfer window slams shut on February 3.

With Villa needing reinforcements after the news that their top scorer, Jhon Duran, is nearing a £64.5 million transfer to Al-Nassr, Emery has set his sights on a number of attacking players, including Asensio.

Villa Eyeing Several Key Targets

Along with Asensio, Villa is also reportedly interested in Chelsea’s Joao Felix, Wolves’ Matheus Cunha, and Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel.

However, Asensio seems to be one of the top targets, and it’s understood that Villa are optimistic about securing a deal to bring him in on loan.

The 29-year-old, currently at Paris Saint-Germain, has been on the club’s radar for a while, and Villa are confident that a deal will be relatively simple to strike.

Asensio’s PSG Journey and Future Plans

Asensio has been with PSG since his move from Real Madrid in July 2023.

Under contract with the French giants until 2026, the Spain international has made 47 appearances for PSG, scoring seven goals.

However, despite his decent form, PSG is looking to offload him this winter and have reportedly made him available to various potential suitors, which has opened the door for Villa.

Before joining PSG, Asensio enjoyed a highly successful spell at Real Madrid, where he bagged 61 goals in 286 appearances and won three UEFA Champions League titles.

His vast experience on the European stage would certainly be a huge asset to Villa, especially with their impressive Champions League run this season.

Villa’s European Ambitions and Asensio’s Role

Aston Villa secured a spot in the round of 16 of this season’s Champions League with a 4-2 win over Celtic, finishing eighth in the league phase.

In contrast, Asensio was an unused substitute as PSG triumphed 4-1 over Stuttgart but finished in a disappointing 15th position, which means they’ll face Benfica in the play-offs for a chance to reach the round of 16.

As Villa’s Champions League journey progresses, adding a player of Asensio’s caliber could be just what they need to strengthen their squad as they aim for success on the European stage.
