Arsonists Set Fire to Historic Farmhouse at Princess Diana’s Althorp Estate Causing Major Damage

It’s not every day that a place tied so closely to royal history is struck by such senseless destruction.

But that’s exactly what happened at Althorp House, the ancestral home of Princess Diana, where an arson attack has left the family—and many royal admirers—reeling.

A Fire That Shook the Spencer Family

Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother and custodian of the Althorp estate, took to social media to break the news.

On X (formerly known as Twitter), he posted a sobering update revealing that one of the estate’s farmhouses had been set ablaze by what appears to be vandals.

He shared photos showing the extent of the damage and expressed his shock:

“Stunned to learn that one of ⁦@AlthorpHouse⁩’s farmhouses—fortunately, unoccupied at the time—was apparently burnt down by vandals last night.”

He went on to thank the local fire service for their efforts to contain the blaze, adding,

“So very sad that anyone would think this a fun thing to do.”

A Place Rich with Personal History

Althorp isn’t just any country estate—it’s where Diana spent much of her formative years.

After her parents’ divorce, Diana lived there until she married Prince Charles (now King Charles) in 1981.

The estate holds deep emotional significance, not just for the Spencer family, but for anyone who admired the late princess.

After Diana’s tragic death in a car crash in Paris in 1997, she was laid to rest on a private island in the middle of the estate’s Oval Lake—a deeply personal and symbolic place for her family.

The Aftermath: Damage and Grief

More information about the fire’s impact was shared by Adey Greeno, Althorp’s longtime head gamekeeper.

Also posting on X, Greeno confirmed the worst: the building was so damaged that it had to be completely torn down for safety.

“The farmhouse that we lost to a deliberate act of vandalism last night has now had to be razed to the ground for safety reasons,” he wrote. “So sad. The world we live in.”

A Legacy Under Attack

Althorp House has been the seat of the Spencer family since the 1500s.

With over 13,000 acres of land, it’s where Charles, Diana, and their two sisters grew up.

The estate has long served as a place of memory and heritage—now marred by this cruel act.

As of now, the incident is still under investigation, and more updates are expected.
