Armed man wearing tactical gear opens fire at Border Patrol facility near McAllen Airport before being killed by agents in Texas shootout

McAllen Airport

What started as a quiet Monday morning near the McAllen International Airport in Texas quickly turned into a terrifying scene.

A heavily armed man, dressed in tactical gear and ready for confrontation, launched a violent attack on a U.S. Border Patrol facility—only to be killed by agents before he could make it inside.

Gunman Identified as 27-Year-Old Ryan Mosqueda

The man behind the assault was later identified as Ryan Louis Mosqueda, a 27-year-old carrying a Michigan driver’s license.

According to McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez, Mosqueda drove up to the Rio Grande Valley Sector Annex and opened fire with an assault rifle, targeting the building and the agents inside.

Dozens of Rounds Fired in the Ambush

Chief Rodriguez described the scene as a full-on ambush.

Mosqueda fired “many, many dozens of rounds” at the facility.

Although agents responded swiftly, it was clear the gunman came prepared—he wore a utility vest and had multiple weapons in his car.

Disturbing Message Found on Vehicle

When authorities searched Mosqueda’s white Chevrolet, they discovered a chilling message: the phrase “CORDIS DIE” spray-painted in black on the driver’s side door.

The phrase references a fictional terrorist group from the Call of Duty video game series, which raises questions about Mosqueda’s mindset and possible influences.

Police Officer Injured During Shootout

In the exchange of gunfire, McAllen police officer Ismael García—who has served on the force for a decade—was struck in the knee.

Officials haven’t yet confirmed whether the injury was caused by Mosqueda’s bullets or friendly fire.

Thankfully, no other agents or officers were reported injured.

Flights Delayed and Graphic Scenes Outside the Building

As chaos unfolded just a short distance from McAllen Airport, flights were delayed.

Graphic images later showed Mosqueda’s body outside the Border Patrol building, a grim reminder of the threat agents faced that day.

CBP Responds and Investigation Underway

U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed the attack in a statement, saying: “The suspect is deceased.

The incident is still under investigation.” Authorities are still piecing together the gunman’s movements and intentions, especially after learning he had been reported missing from nearby Weslaco earlier that morning around 4 a.m.

Cache of Weapons Discovered in Vehicle

Mosqueda never made it inside the building—but his car, which had Michigan plates, was found loaded with weapons.

Investigators found additional rifles and ammunition inside, though it’s still unclear if Mosqueda owned the vehicle himself.

Attack Follows Recent Shooting Near ICE Facility

This violent episode comes on the heels of another attack in Texas just days earlier.

A police officer in Alvarado was shot in the neck near an ICE detention facility in Prairieland.

That officer has since been treated and released from a Fort Worth hospital.

Multiple suspects in that case were apprehended while trying to flee.

DOJ Promises Tough Response to Attacks on Federal Officers

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche addressed the recent wave of violence on federal facilities and personnel, warning: “The Department [of Justice] has zero tolerance for assaults on federal officers or property and will bring the full weight of the law against those responsible.”
