Once known as one of the most expensive English footballers ever, Andy Carroll’s career took another surprising twist this summer as he debuted for Dagenham & Redbridge.

But his first outing with the non-league side didn’t go quite as planned.

The 36-year-old striker stepped onto the pitch in a preseason friendly against League Two side Crawley Town — a match that ended in a humbling 5-1 loss for Dagenham.

Tough Start in a New Chapter

Carroll was subbed on around the 60th minute, with his new side already trailing 2-1.

Hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed as Crawley’s mystery man, referred to only as “Trialist B,” went on a rampage, netting two late goals to widen the gap.

Despite a warm welcome from the home crowd, the veteran striker couldn’t shift the tide.

The result wasn’t ideal, but it was just a preseason test — the real work lies ahead.

Big Name in a Small Pond

Carroll’s arrival at Dagenham turned heads earlier this month.

Not only did he sign a three-year playing contract, but he also bought into the club as an investor.

For a man who once cost Liverpool a jaw-dropping £35 million in 2011, joining a sixth-tier team is a massive shift — but one that Carroll appears to be embracing with open arms.

“I’m really excited to get started with Dagenham,” he said at the time.
“My kids thought I was signing for Chelsea — they’re in for a shock!”

Coming Home — With a Twist

After spending two years in France’s Ligue 2, playing for Amiens and then Bordeaux, Carroll is back on English soil. And his reasons are personal.

The East London location means he’ll be closer to his children, who can now come and watch their dad in action on a regular basis.

The move isn’t just about football. It’s about family, roots, and perhaps even a long-term role behind the scenes at the club.

From England Striker to National League South

It’s been quite the journey for Carroll. He broke out at Newcastle, played 143 games across two stints, and went on to have spells at Liverpool, West Ham, Preston, West Brom, and Reading.

Along the way, he also earned nine England caps and scored twice for the national team.

But now, his story continues in the sixth tier of English football — the National League South.

Dagenham’s competitive season officially kicks off on August 9th at home against Ebbsfleet United.

Whether Carroll can make a difference on the pitch remains to be seen, but his presence is already giving the club an unexpected spotlight.
