The Arrest of Chidimma Adetshina’s Mother: What We Know
In a surprising turn of events, it has been confirmed that Anabela Rungo, the mother of Miss Universe Nigeria Chidimma Adetshina, was detained on Saturday, February 15, at a property in Cape Town, Western Cape.
The Department of Home Affairs has shared some shocking details about the circumstances leading to her arrest.
Fraudulent South African Documents and Arrest
Anabela Rungo was taken into custody after the Department of Home Affairs discovered that her South African documentation had been obtained through fraudulent means.
This revelation dates back to September 2024, when the department revoked her documents, stating that she was no longer eligible to remain in South Africa.
Prior to the Miss South Africa pageant last year, there were reports suggesting that the person listed as Chidimma’s mother might have committed identity theft and fraud.
The suspicion arose when it was discovered that a South African woman’s identity might have been stolen to allow Rungo to register her child, making it impossible for the real person to do so.
Clarification on Chidimma Adetshina’s Involvement
The Department of Home Affairs made it clear that Chidimma herself couldn’t have been involved in her mother’s illegal actions.
Chidimma was only an infant when these activities allegedly took place back in 2001.
Therefore, any wrongdoing attributed to her mother would not involve her.
Rungo’s Defiance and Ongoing Investigation
In what appears to be a blatant disregard for South African law, Rungo allegedly continued to live in the country using a Mozambican passport, despite her “undesirable” status.
Investigations into further fraudulent activities are still ongoing, with the Department of Home Affairs working closely with the Counter Corruption and Immigration Services branches.
During the operation that led to Rungo’s arrest, authorities discovered that her under-aged child was also living with her, raising concerns about the child’s welfare.
As part of the process, Rungo will be handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) after being processed by Home Affairs for her unlawful stay in the country.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation is also looking into the case.
Protecting the Interests of the Child
The Department of Home Affairs is collaborating with the Department of Social Development and SAPS’s Child Protection Unit to ensure that the under-aged child’s safety and well-being are prioritized.
The department has stated that further updates will be provided at the appropriate time, but no interviews will be conducted about the case for now.
