Australian actress and social media personality Alea O’Shea has revealed to her fans that she has been diagnosed with brain cancer.
The 25-year-old, known for her role as Darcy Callahan on Home and Away between 2011–2014 and again from 2016–2017, shared the news in a heartfelt video to her 300,000 followers, describing the past few weeks as “insane.”
The Start of a Health Scare
Alea explained that her journey began around six weeks ago when she noticed subtle changes in her body.
Initially, she brushed off the warning signs: a slightly uneven smile, difficulty finding words, and mild migraines.
However, the symptoms escalated while she was working in the United States, including losing sensation in two fingers, which spread to her wrist and even her toe.
Seeking Answers
At first, Alea assumed it was a minor issue, like a pinched nerve, and visited her physiotherapist.
It quickly became clear that the problem was more serious, and she was referred for a brain scan, which ultimately led to her diagnosis.
Alea emphasized the importance of trusting your instincts when your body feels “off” and advocating for proper medical care.
Living Openly Through Treatment
Despite the shocking news, Alea remains determined to live openly and authentically
She shared that while she can still walk and move, the left side of her body has been affected, with potential for further complications.
“Can I flip you off? No. Thumbs up? No. Or hold things? No,” she joked, showing her resilience and sense of humour.
Facing Surgery and Challenges Ahead
Doctors have warned Alea about possible complications from surgery, including the risk of hair loss and paralysis on her left side.
She stressed that treatment will require flexibility and patience: “In the coming months, I might be doing videos one handed.
I might disappear when I need to, but mostly, I’m going to be showing up as me every single day that I can.”
Gratitude for Support
Alea expressed deep gratitude for the support she has received from fans, family, and friends.
She thanked her followers for sticking with her and for being invested in her journey so far.
“To everyone who follows me and has been invested in my journey thus far, regardless, thank you so much for being here.
And thank you for staying through this chapter,” she said.
Refusing to Be Defined by Illness
Despite the severity of her diagnosis, Alea made it clear that brain cancer will not define her.
She sees it as one part of her life story rather than her whole identity. “It’s just another part of my story.
And if it can bring some perspective, comfort, or positivity to other people out there going through it, whilst helping me get through it, that’s all I could ever want,” she concluded.
Staying Positive and Connected
Alea’s message is one of resilience and hope.
She plans to continue sharing her life with her followers while navigating treatment and recovery, staying true to herself and her characteristic humour, wit, and energy.
