Amid growing uncertainty over Alexander Isak’s situation at Newcastle, club legend Alan Shearer has weighed in, suggesting the Swedish striker could still find a path back into the team—if he remains at St James’ Park once the transfer window closes.
Shearer Sees a Slim but Possible Route Back
“Yeah, I do see a way back,” Shearer told Daily Mail Sport, speaking as a Betfair Ambassador.
“The longer it drags on, the more difficult it becomes.
But if he comes back in and starts scoring goals, that changes everything.
I’m not privy to the inner workings at the club, so I honestly don’t know what’s going to happen in the next few days.”
A Complicated Situation for Player and Club
The 25-year-old Isak has been pushing for a move to Liverpool, leaving Newcastle in a tricky position.
Shearer admitted the situation is far from ideal for everyone involved, including the manager who faces daily scrutiny over the striker’s future.
“It’s a really difficult scenario for both the player and the football club,” Shearer explained “And it’s not nice for the manager to be asked about this every day.
The team comes first, far above any individual.”
Shearer Calls Out Isak’s Statement
Last week, Shearer criticized Isak’s public declaration that his relationship with Newcastle “could not continue,” calling it “nonsensical.”
He also suggested that Isak consider replacing his agent, given the “f****** mess” surrounding the transfer saga.
What Shearer Would Do as Captain
Reflecting on his time as Newcastle captain from 1998 to 2006, Shearer shared how he might have approached the situation on the pitch.
“At the start, you’d probably try to have a word,” he said. “But the longer it drags on, you leave it to the powers that be—whether that’s the manager or the owners. This has been going on for a long time now.”
He emphasized the importance of keeping the squad unified.
“As a captain, you’ve got to make sure all the players are aligned, saying the same thing and wanting the same thing. Judging by the first couple of matches, the Newcastle players are.
They’ve only got one point from two games, but their performances deserved more.”
Speaking at the Betfair Launch
Shearer made his comments during the launch of Betfair’s new “Safe Sub” feature, which allows bets to roll onto substitute players in selected leagues and markets when your chosen player is taken off.
