Orlando Pirates’ Search for a New Left-Back
Orlando Pirates are slowly losing hope in their chase for Fawaaz Basadien, a highly sought-after left-back.
As the pursuit for Basadien hits a snag, the club has shifted its focus to a more realistic and affordable option: former Kaizer Chiefs player Omega Mdaka.
Mdaka: A Viable Option for Pirates
Reports suggest that the Pirates are keeping a close eye on Omega Mdaka, who currently plays for Stellenbosch.
The 21-year-old joined the Winelands club in July 2024 and has already made a significant impact, featuring in six league games and 14 across all competitions this season.
According to Soccer-Laduma, Mdaka is seen as a practical alternative to Basadien, who remains their top target.
An insider shared that while Pirates have struggled to secure Basadien, they are considering Mdaka as a potential solution.
“Mdaka is young, and his potential is undeniable,” the source said.
“They’re monitoring him closely before making any final decisions.”
Pirates’ Current Left-Back Situation
At the moment, Pirates’ left-back options are limited.
Innocent Maela, a regular, hasn’t seen much playtime lately, and Paseka Mako is just coming off an injury.
This has led to Deon Hotto being used in the left-back position.
With this in mind, Pirates are looking for a permanent solution and have identified Mdaka as a promising candidate.
Scouts have noted his performance, and he could be a valuable addition to their defensive lineup.
Coach Riveiro’s Next Challenge
Looking ahead, Pirates have a busy schedule, with a Nedbank Cup Round of 16 match against Baroka set for Saturday, February 15.
This will be followed by a Betway Premiership clash away to Golden Arrows on February 19.
Unfortunately, Pirates will be without Thabiso Sesane for the rest of the season due to a tendon rupture.
What Does This Mean for Mdaka’s Future?
With Pirates exploring their options for strengthening their defense, it remains to be seen if Mdaka will be the answer.
His potential is clear, but the club’s next move could depend on further scouting and whether they are able to secure him before others swoop in.
