ASUP, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, has encouraged its members to be ready to cease working at any time if necessary.
Mr. Anderson Umezurike Ezeibe, the organization’s National President, announced this while speaking to members of the union at Hussain Adamu Federal Polytechnic in Kazaure.
The order comes only days after ASUU, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, went on a four-week warning strike.
According to him, the ASUP called off its strike on June 10th, 2021, as a result of agreements struck with the federal government.
Anderson explained that part of the agreement include the release of N15 billion for the revitalisation of Polytechnics and Monotechnics and payment of the arrears of minimum wage, the inauguration of the governing council and the pay as you earned liability issue”
He said since the agreement was reached, the Federal Government has only fulfilled a few while others have not been achieved.
“Despite the suspension of the strike the revitalization fund is yet to be released after its approval by the President Muhammadu Buhari as well as the minimum wage arrears”
“The renegotiation paperwork is still being worked on, as is the agreement renegotiation process.”
“As a result, a strike is a legitimate tool of engagement when the government fails to meet our objectives,” he stated.
“Strike is a decision made by National Executives, therefore whenever we submit a progress report and it does not meet the approval and satisfaction of the NEC, strike becomes an option.”
He stated that the NEC will make a decision at its next meeting, which will be held in Mubi in March.
