What was supposed to be a joyful sightseeing adventure for a young Spanish family ended in unspeakable tragedy over the Hudson River.
Agustín Escobar, his wife Mercè Camprubí Montal, and their three children were visiting New York to celebrate their daughter’s birthday with a helicopter tour around the Statue of Liberty.
But just minutes into the flight, disaster struck. The helicopter’s rotor suddenly detached mid-air and sliced through its tail, causing the aircraft to spiral helplessly into the water below.
Tragically, the entire family and their pilot didn’t survive.
Moments of Joy Before the Unthinkable
Only 16 minutes before the crash, the family had been smiling and posing for photos with the helicopter—likely unaware it would be their final moments together.
At around 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, harrowing footage captured the aircraft plummeting from the sky and crashing into the Hudson.
It was later revealed that the pilot had radioed a warning about low fuel shortly before the aircraft went down.
The brief message suggested they were planning to land soon—but time ran out far too quickly.
A History of Heartbreak in the Hudson
Sadly, this isn’t the first time the Hudson River has been the site of an aerial disaster.
In fact, New York’s iconic skyline, often enjoyed by tourists from the sky, has been the backdrop for several helicopter and plane crashes over the years.
Perhaps the most well-known of them all was the miraculous emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in 2009—an event that earned the name “Miracle on the Hudson.”
The Miracle That Gave Everyone Hope
Back in 2009, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger became a national hero when he safely landed his commercial jet on the Hudson River after both engines failed due to a bird strike.
On that frigid January day, all 155 passengers and crew survived—a nearly impossible feat under the circumstances.
Sully had to choose between attempting to return to the airport or going straight for the river.
He chose the latter, and thanks to his precision and bravery, passengers climbed out onto the wings and were quickly rescued by commuter ferries.
Deadly Collision in the Sky in 2009
Not every incident has had such a fortunate ending.
Just months after Sully’s heroic landing, tragedy struck again when a sightseeing helicopter carrying Italian tourists collided mid-air with a small plane over the Hudson.

In 2013, another helicopter faced trouble over the Hudson—but this time, the pilot managed to pull off an emergency landing.
A Swedish family touring the city had just 12 minutes in the air before the helicopter lost power.
With quick thinking, the pilot brought the chopper down safely on the water.
It stayed upright, and no one was seriously hurt.
Though shaken, the family and crew walked away—thanks to the pilot’s calm response under pressure.
Vintage Plane Goes Down in 2016
A more somber crash occurred in 2016 when William “Bill” Gordon, a seasoned pilot, died after his vintage WWII-era P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft went down in the Hudson.
He had been flying as part of an airshow tribute when the engine failed unexpectedly.
Investigators later found mechanical damage in the plane’s engine, which was leaking oil. Gordon was remembered as a skilled and passionate aviator who had spent decades mastering these historic aircraft.
Tragedy on the East River in 2018
Though many crashes have happened over the Hudson, another horrific accident occurred in the East River in 2018.
A sightseeing helicopter went down after its tail snagged on the fuel shutoff lever.
While the pilot managed to escape, the five passengers on board weren’t so lucky.
They were trapped in their safety harnesses as the chopper flipped and sank, unable to get out in time.
All five drowned in the frigid water.
