What was supposed to be a relaxing weekend getaway aboard the luxury cruise ship MSC Virtuosa turned into a scene of shock and sorrow.
The ship had just set sail from Southampton on Saturday evening for a short two-night cruise to Bruges when the unthinkable happened—within just a few hours, a man was dead.
Sudden Death Sparks Murder Investigation
The man, aged 60, tragically lost his life following an alleged altercation on board.
Authorities confirmed that he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Now, a 57-year-old man from Exeter—believed to have been a friend of the deceased—is under arrest on suspicion of murder.
He remains in custody as the investigation unfolds.
Scene Onboard and Aftermath at Port
Sources onboard described a heavy police presence when the ship returned to Southampton this morning, docking at the Horizon terminal.
One passenger mentioned that the atmosphere was tense, especially as grieving family members tried to get access to the ship.
“Three family members, including two women and a man who may be his daughters and son, were trying to reach the ship to demand the body be released,” the source shared.
The family is reportedly local to the Southampton area and is said to be part of a known traveller community.
Police Confirm Details and Seek Witnesses
Hampshire Police have confirmed they’re treating the incident as a homicide.
The ship had left Southampton at around 6 p.m. on Saturday, and the incident was reported by approximately 8:30 p.m.
The man’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
Cruise Line Responds
MSC Cruises also released a statement, confirming that authorities had been contacted immediately after the incident.
“We are cooperating fully with the investigation and offering full support to those affected,” the company said.
What Happens Next?
Investigators will now continue piecing together what happened in the lead-up to the fatal event.
Meanwhile, passengers and crew are likely dealing with the emotional weight of the tragedy.
More updates are expected in the coming days as the case develops.
