A 55-Year-Old Woman Tragically Strangled by Her Scarf in a Conveyor Belt Accident at a Factory in El Campillo, Spain

A factory in the Spanish town of El Campillo became the site of a devastating accident early this morning.

Around 7:30 a.m., emergency services were alerted to the scene, where a 55-year-old woman was found unconscious after her scarf became entangled in a conveyor belt.

Despite swift efforts by paramedics, the civil guard, and the fire brigade, she was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Reports suggest that the scarf caught on the sorting belt, leading to fatal strangulation.

The Labour Inspection and Occupational Risk Prevention Centre are currently examining the circumstances to determine how such a tragedy could occur.

Similar Tragedies in Recent Years

This heartbreaking event echoes other incidents involving machinery and conveyor belts.

Nearly a year ago, on February 14, 2024, a long-serving baggage handler at London’s Heathrow Airport suffered a life-altering injury under eerily similar circumstances.

Jasbir Sahota, 52, had been unloading luggage from a flight when her scarf became caught in a conveyor belt. T

he accident caused significant brain damage, leaving her in need of ongoing specialist care after three decades of dedicated work at the airport.

A Decade-Old Reminder from Alicante

Such accidents are not limited to workers.

In September 2013, a tragic accident at Alicante Airport in Spain claimed the life of a five-month-old baby named Vashti.

Her mother, Nathania Terry, had placed Vashti’s car seat on a stationary baggage carousel while retrieving a stroller.

Without warning, the belt activated, pulling the car seat into a gap between two conveyor systems.

Despite Ms. Terry’s frantic attempts to save her daughter, the baby was fatally injured.

Raising Awareness About Safety

These distressing incidents highlight the critical importance of safety measures in workplaces and public spaces involving machinery.

From ensuring proper training to enforcing stricter guidelines on clothing and accessory restrictions around conveyor belts, these preventable tragedies serve as sobering reminders of the consequences of oversight.

By learning from these events, industries and individuals alike can work towards safer environments, sparing others from similar heartbreak.
