Less than a week after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, Celtic supporters hoisted a “provocative” anti-monarchy flag during a Champions League match. Celtic has now been fined.
On September 14, the flag was shown in the Hoops’ portion of the field during their game against Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine.
The words “Sorry For Your Loss Michael Fagan” were written on another, which was a reference to the man who broke into the late queen’s chamber in 1982.
Uefa’s control, ethics, and disciplinary authority has fined the Scottish champions €15,000 for what it deemed to be “a message not suited for a competitive event” (i.e. a provocative banner).
Additionally, Celtic was penalized €4,250 for using pyrotechnics during a September 6 Champions League encounter at home versus Real Madrid.
Tuesday’s Group F showdown between the Scottish Premiership team and RB Leipzig is crucial since they have only earned one point during their first three games.
