At Least 127 Dead After Violence at Indonesian Football Match

Police reported that losing team supporters attacked and then a stadium stampede ensued when tear gas was shot.

127 people were murdered and 180 were injured in a stampede at a football game in East Java, Indonesia.

Sunday, Indonesian police provided this information. Nico Afinta, chief of police for East Java, told reporters that Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya supporters attacked the field at the conclusion of their match. The police responded by firing tear gas, resulting in a stampede. Suffocation occurred during the accident.

The news was provided by the news agency Reuters.

People fleeing to the Malang stadium while carrying dead were captured on video by local news stations.

After this match, the Indonesian premier league BRI League 1 has prohibited games for one week. In this match Persebaya won 3-2. The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has initiated an investigation into the event.
