London – Novak Djokovic stated that he wants his greatest rivals by his side when he retires, similar to Roger Federer’s tearful farewell to the sport last week.

Images Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, who enjoyed one of tennis’ most thrilling rivalries, sitting together and crying after a Laver Cup doubles loss on Friday at London’s O2 Arena went viral on social media.

Federer’s other major competitors, Djokovic and Andy Murray, were also present for the 41-year-final old’s bow.

Djokovic told reporters on Tuesday in Tel Aviv, where he will compete in an ATP 250 tournament this week, “It was simply a really sweet, very emotional moment.”

“Seeing his children and his family moved me as well. I’ve also been contemplating how my life will look after I retire from tennis.

I would love to have my greatest opponents and adversaries there, in addition to my family and the closest individuals in my life, of course. Because it added something unique and increased the significance of the occasion.”

The 35-year-old, who is one major title behind Nadal’s men’s record of 22, stated that his wrist, which had been troubling him during last week’s Laver Cup in London, was no longer a concern.

Djokovic stated that the Spaniard is still his greatest rival.

“We played more matches than any other rivalry in tennis history,” said Djokovic, who missed the Australian and U.S. Opens this year because he was not inoculated against COVID-19.

“The rivalry is excellent and continues. Hopefully, we will have other opportunities to compete against one another. Because it is thrilling for us as well as tennis lovers and sports fans worldwide.”
