This coming Saturday, Orlando Pirates will travel to Atteridgeville to take on Cape Town City at Lucas Moripe Stadium in another crucial DStv Diski Challenge match.

While senior club football is on hiatus, the Reserve League starts its third round of matches, with a showdown between two early-season leaders serving as one of the weekend’s main attractions.

Both teams have won their first two games of the season and are now atop the standings heading into this particular matchup.

Following straight victory against rivals Stellenbosch and Kaizer Chiefs, the squad from the Mother City presently occupies the top spot. In their most recent match, they kept a clean sheet and boast an incredible five goals for and two against.

They will be looking for another Soweto scalp when they face the Buccaneers, who had to settle for a point in their most recent match, a goalless draw at home against Stellenbosch, despite being the dominant team for the whole match.

The three goals scored by Pirates so far this season were all scored in their season-opening victory versus Chiefs at King Zwelithini Stadium.

They are now in second place, tied with two other clubs on four points, and a victory on Saturday may move them to the top of the standings.

In the previous season, the two teams met twice within three weeks, with the Bucs Reserves prevailing in their home leg before playing to a scoreless draw on the road. Two first-half goals from defender Cassius Spandiel and wingback Thabiso Monyane led to the victory.

The last time City won this matchup was in September 2019, when they overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit to win 3-2. The Buccaneers are unbeaten in their last three encounters with City.

Since 2017, there have been a total of four draws in this matchup, while both clubs have earned a single victory.
