The Academic Staff Union of Universities was ordered by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria to terminate its seven-month-long strike.

Judge Polycarp Hamman issued the order on Wednesday in response to a request by the federal government for an interlocutory injunction against the ongoing ASUU strike.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14 to demand, among other things, higher university financing and a reassessment of lecturer wages.

Multiple talks between ASUU and the Federal Government had reached a deadlock.

Consequently, the federal government challenged the strike in court.

James Igwe, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), filed the application seeking a court injunction preventing ASUU from extending the strike awaiting the outcome of the lawsuit brought by Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige.

Wednesday, Mr. Hamman denied ASUU’s objection to the application when he issued the order.
