Amandla Stenberg, an American actress, has recently received much internet criticism for the way she pronounces her South African Xhosa name. The young celebrity was accused of being “lazy” for failing to acquire the proper pronunciation of her African name, while her parents were accused of misappropriating it.
Amandla, who apparently noted the criticism, has subsequently posted videos of herself learning to pronounce her name and the word Xhosa in the same manner as South Africans.
Amandla Stenberg has been urged to learn how to pronounce her name the way South Africans do after they began mocking her on social media for “mispronouncing” it.
During an interview last week, the celebrity was overheard pronouncing the word Xhosa incorrectly.
According to other local TikTokers who viewed the video, she also mispronounced her Xhosa name, which means “Power.”
It appears she saw some of their comments and resolved to learn how to pronounce the name in a way South Africans would find acceptable.
Earlier today, gossip blogger Musa Khawula posted two videos of the actress attempting to pronounce her name with an African accent on Twitter.
Check out how she pronounces Amandla below.

“It is your name, pretty lady. South Africans did not need to intimidate you into speaking it with a beautiful African accent because their own children pronounce their African names with an English accent.

“No, she only learnt how to say it following a public uproar from South Africans; she did not grow up in South Africa.”
