After being accused of a sex assault that allegedly occurred more than ten years ago, a detective inspector was suspended.

Indicted with raping a woman in 2009, James Andrew Darnton, 51, will appear before Liverpool Crown Court next summer.

According to his police department, the accusation refers to a complaint that describes the alleged rape and was received in October 2021.

The former Greater Manchester Police detective was fired from his role as a public protection governance unit employee.

After his criminal case is over, misdemeanour procedures will resume.

On July 10, 2023, Darnton will show up in Liverpool Crown Court.

One of the six national forces put under “special measures” by the police watchdog in 2020 was Greater Manchester Police.

The force’s officers failed to register 80,000 crimes that year, according to a dismal inspection assessment, which also found that victims were “too often let down.”
