A guy driving the wrong way on a busy South Florida highway early Saturday morning collided with another vehicle, killing all five female occupants, according to authorities. The individual with severe injuries was evacuated to a trauma center, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

His condition was unknown at the time.

“Our firefighters were forced to use the jaws to free a casualty from his vehicle,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Division Chief Marc Chavers told local reporters. “Unfortunately, there was no one in the other vehicle who could be saved.”

The accident occurred before dawn in north Miami-Dade County on State Road 826, also known as the Palmetto Expressway, with the driver traveling in the wrong direction.

Saturday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol advised drivers to avoid the area.
