The distribution of 370 tonnes of food aid to 5,000 homes in North Sinai was completed by the Egyptian Red Crescent Society (ERCS) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

The distribution, which was done by ERC volunteers last month, aims to lessen the effects that the North Sinai events have had on locals.

This is the seventh occasion that the ICRC and ERC have attended to the humanitarian needs of people living in North Sinai. 335 tonnes of food aid, 19 tonnes of hygiene kits, and 5,000 floor mats were given out to homes in the governorate in August 2021.

This is a result of the successful collaboration between the ICRC and ERC, which allowed the two groups to serve 237,500 people across 47,500 families in North Sinai through a combined distribution programme that began in 2017.

The ERC and the ICRC launched a cooperative livelihood programme in 2021 to help North Sinai’s needy families. The program’s goal is to give families possibilities for sustainable livelihoods that will increase their income by helping them start small businesses.

ERC has helped 115 people so far with livelihoods based on livestock, agriculture, services, and trade, and it is still assessing requirements in order to help 500 families by the end of this year.

In the hamlet of Shiekh Zuwied, the programme will provide 8.5 million Egyptian pounds in assistance to 500 needy households in 2022. To date, hundreds of families have signed up to participate in the initiative.

With a close operational relationship, the Egyptian Red Crescent and the International Committee of the Red Cross operate as parts of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement. As a result of fighting and other violence in the area, family members who had been split up were to be brought back together through the efforts of this strategic alliance.

The RCRC Movement’s guiding values of humanism, impartiality, neutrality, and independence serve as the foundation for the work of both humanitarian organisations.
