Independent, safety-focused Branch to make recommendations to prevent future incidents, make our roads even safer and save lives across the country

I want to let the House know that my department’s response to the government consultation on creating a Road Collision Investigation Branch was released today, June 29, 2022.

This administration is dedicated to enhancing traffic safety and lowering the annual toll of fatalities and serious injuries on our roads.

I’m happy to report that the government intends to propose new regulations to facilitate the establishment of the Branch, which will be known as the Road Safety Investigation Branch after negotiations with stakeholders.

This independent, safety-focused Branch will carry out independent investigations and make recommendations to prevent subsequent incidents, make our roads even safer, and save lives across the nation.

It will learn from traffic collisions and other incidents, including those involving self-driving cars.

In order to guarantee that road safety policy keeps up with new advances, the Branch will also offer crucial insight into safety trends relating to emerging and innovative technology.

In the upcoming Transportation Bill, we anticipate including provisions that will allow for the Branch’s formation.
