Charley Hull struggles at Paris Olympics as smoking ban impacts performance at Le Golf National

Charley Hull, the talented 28-year-old golfer from Team GB, is back in the spotlight as she aims to improve on her seventh-place finish at the Rio Olympic Games.

However, she’s facing a unique challenge this time around.

Known for her habit of smoking on the golf course, Hull has garnered attention for using cigarettes to manage her nerves, a coping mechanism she developed after being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) last year.

Despite its effectiveness for her, the rules at Le Golf National, where the event is taking place, prohibit smoking.

Hull admitted that this smoking ban might affect her performance.

On Wednesday morning, she hit her first tee shot into the water, marking a tough start to her bid for gold.

Unfortunately, her difficulties continued, and she found herself at the bottom of the leaderboard with a score of eight over par after 13 holes.

Reflecting on the smoking ban, Hull said, “Yeah, I do smoke on the course, it’s just something I do.

It’s a habit but I won’t do it this week.

I think it will affect my chances because it relaxes me a little bit.

But it is what it is.”

Competition and Hopes

Despite her struggles, Hull remains determined.

United States’ Nelly Korda, the favorite for the gold medal, also had a slow start and was tied with Hull at two over par through her first four holes.

Team GB is hoping for more success in golf, following Tommy Fleetwood’s silver medal in the men’s individual event earlier this week.

Hull is not alone in her quest for Olympic success.

She is competing alongside her close friend and fellow British golfer, Georgia Hall.

Hull, who withdrew from the pandemic-delayed Olympics in 2021, cited the bubble restrictions as a significant factor in her decision.

However, she expressed no regrets and shared her excitement about returning to the Olympics in Paris, describing it as even sweeter given the long wait since Rio.

Partnership with Georgia Hall

The two-time LPGA winner spoke about the joy of playing with Hall, her childhood friend.

“We have known each other since we were 11 and grew up practicing together.

It’s perfect to get to play with my best mate,” Hull said.

The duo has been a formidable pair, contributing to Europe’s victories in the past three Solheim Cups and teaming up at the Dow Championship, which they described as a “no-brainer.”

Looking Forward

Charley Hull and Georgia Hall are set to compete at the iconic Le Golf National from August 7 to 10, hoping to bring home more success for Team GB in the Olympic Games.
