Cricket legend Sir Geoffrey Boycott, who has long been a cherished figure in the sport, recently faced a serious health scare. After undergoing surgery for a second bout of throat cancer, Boycott’s recovery took a turn for the worse when he developed pneumonia.

The 83-year-old, known for his impressive career with England and his later work as a commentator, believes that his wife, Rachael, played a crucial role in saving his life.

Following his surgery, Boycott returned home with hopes of a smooth recovery. However, things quickly deteriorated when he fell ill with pneumonia. The situation escalated rapidly, and Boycott found himself back in the hospital just days later.

In a recent column for The Telegraph, he expressed his gratitude and relief, attributing his survival to his wife’s quick actions.

Boycott shared a harrowing account of how Rachael’s intervention was pivotal.

He described feeling well initially but then suddenly becoming delirious and incoherent.

Using a pulse oximeter, Rachael discovered that his blood oxygen level had dangerously dropped to 35 percent.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, she immediately called for an ambulance, which led to his swift return to the hospital where he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

In his heartfelt column, Boycott stated, “I am still here because of the quick thinking of my wife Rachael.

If she had not acted so quickly, I am pretty sure I would not have made it through the night. She saved my life, no doubt about that.”

Family’s Statement and Ongoing Struggles

On July 21, Boycott’s family issued a statement updating the public on his condition.

His daughter Emma expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support and informed that Boycott was back in the hospital due to pneumonia, unable to eat or drink, and was being treated with oxygen and a feeding tube.

This setback came shortly after Boycott revealed that his cancer had returned, over 20 years after his initial diagnosis in 2003.

The situation has understandably been challenging, but the support from his family and the timely intervention by his wife have been crucial in his fight against this serious illness.
