On July 29, 2024, a paraglider’s inaugural flight using a DIY kit took a turn for the worse when he collided with a hiker.

The man had been gliding over Mount Toratau in Russia’s Bashkortostan Republic, but things quickly went awry.

The paraglider lost control and plummeted to the ground, crashing directly into an unsuspecting hiker.

Footage from the incident captures the paraglider speeding through the air with his yellow-winged equipment before losing control. Within moments, he crashes into the ground and impacts the hiker, causing her to be thrown backward.

A second video shows emergency responders rushing to the scene. A team of five carefully transport the injured woman on a stretcher down the mountain to an awaiting ambulance.

The hiker was taken to a hospital in Sterlitamak, where she was treated for a fractured collarbone, two broken ribs, and a concussion.

The Russian Federation Ministry of Emergency Situations commented on the incident, noting that the paraglider landed hard on top of the woman, leaving her unable to move.

Emergency personnel and volunteers worked quickly to get her to safety.

Ongoing Investigation

The injured woman remains hospitalized, while the paraglider sustained only minor bruises. It is still unclear whether the pilot faces any charges for negligence.

Tragic Paragliding Incident in Colombia

In a separate incident earlier this year, a woman’s attempt to overcome her fear of flying ended in tragedy. Daniela Barrios had posted on social media about her courage to face her flying phobia before embarking on a paragliding adventure in March.

However, during the flight from El Castillo mountain in Colombia, she fell from her seat while soaring over the Pradera Alta trail.

Search-and-Rescue Efforts

Despite the pilot’s best efforts to continue the flight and land safely, a witness reported Barrios’s fall, prompting a search-and-rescue operation. Firefighters found her body in the dark of night, but she had no vital signs and was pronounced dead at the scene.
