Order of Malta announces death of Fra’ Marco Luzzago

Fra’ Marco Luzzago, who has commanded the 1,000-year-old institution since 2020, died on Tuesday, according to the Order of Malta.

According to the order, the 71-year-old died at Villa Ciccolini in the Italian region of Macerata after a “sudden illness.”

On November 8, 2020, the Italian medical practitioner, who entered the order in 1975, was elected as Lieutenant of the Grand Master.

He was anticipated to hold the position for a year before being replaced by a new Grand Master of the order, a position that has usually been held for life.

The kid pleaded guilty to a number of other crimes, including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving while under the influence, and driving without a license, in addition to the two manslaughter charges.

The stolen vehicle was witnessed veering near to and even hitting other crosswalks, jumping the median strip, and traveling at speeds of above 100 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.

On Wednesday, the driver is scheduled to be sentenced.

Giacomo dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguineto, Festing’s successor, died in April 2020 at the age of 75. Festing died in November 2021 at the age of 71.

The order said in its statement: “According to Article 17 of the Constitution of the Sovereign Order of Malta, the Grand Commander, Fra’ Ruy Gonçalo do Valle Peixoto de Villas-Boas has assumed the functions of Lieutenant ad interim and will remain head of the Sovereign Order until the election of the new head of the Order.”

It added that information about the funeral would be released “in the coming hours.”
