According to authorities, a British lady was reportedly raped by a guy giving massage services at Arambol beach in Goa, India.

The anonymous lady filed a report with the Pernem police station on Monday, only days after the alleged event on June 2.

She said she was raped while lying alongside the Sweet Water Lake, close to the famed tourist site of Arambol Beach in Goa, by a man who promised her a massage.

Vincent D’Souza, 32, was apprehended and detained by police within hours.

D’Souza, according to Inspector Vikram Naik, was a former librarian who was a member of a criminal gang that was illegally providing massage services to visitors in the region.

The lady was sunbathing on the banks of Sweet Water Lake with her companion at the time of the alleged attack, according to a Pernem police officer, although he did not elaborate on how the incident occurred.

Last night, D’Souza and his claimed victim were both brought to a neighboring district hospital for medical evaluations.

The accused will appear in front of a local court on Monday and will thereafter be taken into jail.

With about 295,000 visits in 2018, the latest year for which figures are available, the British were the second-largest group of international visitors to Goa.

Goa has a reputation among Indian tourists for its beautiful beaches and distinct atmosphere.

The region was a Portuguese colony until the 1960s, and as a result, the local culture and cuisine have been profoundly affected.

Goa is a popular destination for international tourists. Authorities caused a stir in December last year when they unveiled a statue of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo in Calangute, Goa - the area remained a Portuguese colony until the 1960s
