Britain will supply M270 launchers, which can hit targets up to 80 kilometers distant with precision guided missiles, according to Defence Secretary Ben Wallace.
The UK will provide Ukraine with multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS) to aid the country’s defense against Russian aggression, according to the Defence Secretary.
The cutting-edge M270 armament system, which can hit targets up to 80 kilometers distant with pinpoint accuracy, will provide Ukrainian forces a major increase in capability. The UK’s choice was tightly coordinated with the US’s decision to provide the MLRS derivative known as the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).
In addition to the weapon system, the UK will provide M31A1 munitions in large quantities.
Ben Wallace’s decision comes in response to Ukrainian forces’ requests for longer-range precision weapons to defend themselves against Russian heavy artillery, which has been employed to deadly effect in the eastern Ukraine.
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said:
The UK stands with Ukraine in this fight and is taking a leading role in supplying its heroic troops with the vital weapons they need to defend their country from unprovoked invasion. If the international community continues its support, I believe Ukraine can win.
As Russia’s tactics change, so must our support to Ukraine. These highly capable multiple-launch rocket systems will enable our Ukrainian friends to better protect themselves against the brutal use of long-range artillery, which Putin’s forces have used indiscriminately to flatten cities.
In the United Kingdom, Ukrainian forces will be educated on how to utilize the launchers so that the systems’ effectiveness may be maximized. The UK has previously stated that Ukrainian servicemen will be trained to operate a number of armoured vehicles given by the UK, including the Mastiff, Husky, and Wolfhound.
The United Kingdom was the first European country to give lethal aid to Ukraine, and it has subsequently armed Ukrainian forces with thousands of anti-tank missiles, anti-air systems, and armored vehicles.
Britain has also taken the lead in arranging international military aid supplies, with Ben Wallace convening two international donor conferences to coordinate help from 35 partner countries, and RAF planes transporting thousands of tonnes of military aid to Ukraine from around the world.
The United Kingdom will continue to provide assistance to Ukraine in order to guarantee that it has the resources it requires to defend itself against Russian aggression.
