Hundreds of people are said to have been killed in an attack on a Catholic church in Nigeria.

According to state officials, gunmen killed multiple worshipers at a Catholic Church in southwestern Nigeria on Sunday.

Hundreds of people, including children, are believed to have died, but no official confirmation of the death toll has yet been issued. Body parts were reportedly strewn across the floor in graphic video footage taken from inside the church.

According to the BBC, the incident took place at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in the town of Owo during a Pentecost Sunday service, according to the governor of Ondo state, Arakunrin Akeredolu. Many of the victims were children, according to the governor, who described the violence as a “vile and satanic attack” on innocent people.

The attackers also detonated explosives, according to Ogunmolasuyi Oluwole, a state lawmaker.
