The star’s career and reputation were on the line, yet while a US jury deliberated over graphic allegations of domestic abuse against him, The Mail on Sunday can reveal that he was already out celebrating.
The Hollywood A-lister threw a sumptuous party in London on Tuesday night, hours before the bitter libel battle with ex-wife Amber Heard came to a dramatic conclusion.
Drinking and dancing to’really hard techno’ proceeded until 5 a.m. at the exclusive members’ club Laylow in trendy Notting Hill, with Depp’s star witness, supermodel Kate Moss, racking up a tab reported to be in the region of £250,000.
The bill, however, pales in comparison to the $15 million (£12 million) Depp, 58, was granted in damages a few hours later when a Virginia court ruled in his favor.
‘It was a real celebration and it went on and on,’ said a source. ‘At the time, Johnny didn’t even know he had won the case.
‘A lot of money was spent. The wine, the cocktails and the venue hire didn’t come cheap, but it was the end of the battle with Amber and he clearly wanted to mark that moment in style. Johnny didn’t get there until a bit later, but it was a proper old-school showbiz party.’
Laylow, which has a wine list that includes a £595 Tuscan red and a £429 Californian cabernet sauvignon, is no stranger to star gatherings, having held parties for David Beckham, Stormzy, Mick Jagger, Poppy Delevingne, and Rita Ora. Depp arrived on Tuesday night, fresh off a performance at the Royal Albert Hall with rocker Jeff Beck, which Ms Moss was witnessing.
The model, who had a four-year relationship with Depp in the 1990s, was a major witness in the libel trial, refuting Ms Heard’s allegations that she was a victim of domestic abuse by Depp, stating that he “never pushed me, kicked me, or threw me down any stairs.”
Depp’s complaint against Ms Heard stemming from an essay she wrote in which she referred to herself as a “public figure symbolizing domestic abuse.”
On Friday night in Glasgow, Depp was back on stage with Beck, performing favorites including Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On? and The Beatles’ Paperback Writer. ‘Innocent!’ yelled the audience at the Royal Concert Hall throughout the performance. Innocent!’
Depp’s comeback to the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, possibly in a cameo role, is ‘not unthinkable,’ according to one Hollywood insider. Meanwhile, Ms. Heard, 36, is on the verge of bankruptcy.
