In Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday, the 46-year-old Gold Coast woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to assault.
Magistrate Mark Bamberry handed her a nine-month probation order, with no conviction recorded.
The woman’s lawyer had argued she had experienced a ‘brain snap with a difficult child’ and she was ‘extremely remorseful’.
Magistrate Bamberry sympathised with the woman’s situation, but said society had ‘moved on’ from physically punishing children.
I accept this completely out of character,’ he said during sentencing.
‘I can understand why she’s done what she’s done.
‘I can only imagine how difficult this is as a single mother with two children to make ends meet.’
The woman is allowed to see her children twice a week while supervised.
