Green Bay Packers Announce Jordan Love’s Historic Four-Year, $220 Million Contract Extension with a $75 Million Signing Bonus

In a major move for the Green Bay Packers, quarterback Jordan Love has secured a massive four-year contract extension valued at $220 million. According to recent reports, the deal includes a hefty $75 million signing bonus and $155 million in guarantees.

This new contract places Love among the highest-paid players in the league and marks him as the best-paid quarterback in NFL history.

This milestone comes on the heels of Love leading the NFL’s youngest team to a 10-9 record and a playoff spot last season, his first as a starting quarterback.

He took over the role after four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets in April 2023.

Coincidentally, the same day Love’s extension was announced, Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa agreed to a four-year extension worth $212.4 million.

Detroit Lions’ Jared Goff also signed a four-year deal worth $212 million with $170 million guaranteed, and Jacksonville Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence secured a five-year extension for $275 million with $142 million guaranteed earlier in the offseason.

Contract Talks and Training Camp

At 25 years old, Love had been absent from Packers training camp practices this week while negotiations were ongoing.

Despite this, he remained involved in team activities and workouts. His previous contract was set to expire after the upcoming season.

The Packers are clearly confident in Love’s potential, especially considering his performance last season.

After signing him to a one-year extension in May 2023—which included $13.5 million guaranteed and $9 million in incentives—the team needed to assess his capabilities as a starter. Following Rodgers’ departure, Love stepped up remarkably.

Impressive Performance

Last season, Love completed 64.2% of his passes, amassing 4,159 yards with 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. His performance notably improved as the season progressed.

He threw 21 touchdown passes and just one interception during a nine-game stretch, culminating in a 48-32 upset over the Dallas Cowboys in a wild-card playoff game.

However, Love did have a tough outing in the following week, throwing two second-half interceptions in a 24-21 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Historical Context

Love’s stats are impressive for a first-year starter. The only other quarterbacks to throw for at least 4,000 yards and 32 touchdowns in their first season with multiple starts were Kurt Warner in 1999 and Patrick Mahomes in 2018.

Only Mahomes (50), Warner (41), and Daunte Culpepper (33 in 2000) have thrown more than 32 touchdown passes in their debut seasons with multiple starts.

Last season, Love’s 32 touchdown passes were second in the league, just behind Dallas’ Dak Prescott (36).

A New Chapter

Before last season, Love had made only one career start.

The Packers had traded up to select him from Utah State with the 26th overall pick in the 2020 draft, and he spent his first three seasons as a backup to Rodgers. With his new contract, it’s clear the Packers are betting on his bright future ahead.
