WP: EU сomplies with Russian demand to pay for gas in rubles

Fact Checked by TDPel News Desk

According to The Washington Post, most EU nations agreed to Russia’s demand to pay for gas in rubles because they were frightened of an energy catastrophe.

As a result, the author of the piece argues, Moscow won the gas war. The European Union, on the other hand, intends to lessen its reliance on Russian gas in the future. However, finding alternative supplies has been difficult, and European governments are prepared to go to any length to prevent a catastrophe.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a regulation at the end of March allowing for the conversion of payments for gas deliveries to unfriendly nations into rubles.

States that refuse to do transactions in Russian currency would be considered in breach of their agreements, according to the country’s leader. The new method for purchasing and selling gas went into effect on April 1st.

According to Bloomberg analyst Xavier Blas, a real economic collapse will overtake Europe in late autumn due to the energy crisis caused by rising prices for hydrocarbons and electricity.
