SEATTLE – On May 22 just around 7 p.m., firefighters responded to to the 9800 block of 45th Ave. SW in West Seattle for a fire in a residential home. Upon arrival, Engine 37 reported heavy smoke coming from a front window on the 1st floor of the home, and that one occupant was unaccounted for. Firefighters from multiple crews searched the home and helped to rescue an approximately 74-year-old male from the floor where the fire occurred. Seattle Fire Department (SFD) paramedics treated and transported the patient in critical condition to Harborview. Two additional occupants were home when the fire occurred (one located inside, and one outside), and were transported via AMR in stable condition to Harborview for further evaluation.

Prior to SFD’s arrival on scene, about six neighbors jumped into action with fire extinguishers, but the fire had already taken off. The fire was contained to the first floor and under control within about 10 minutes.

SFD’s fire investigators ruled the fire as “accidental” and determined it started from an overheated electrical power strip. Total estimated loss is $200,000.

SAFETY TIP: Use power strips that have surge protectors. For other tips, visit SFD’s Fireline blog post on electrical safety.
