Orlando Pirates finished as runners-up in this season’s CAF Confederation Cup, winning $625 000 (R10 million) for their efforts.

The Buccaneers lost Friday’s final 5-4 in a penalty shootout against RS Berkane in Uyo, Nigeria.

The match ended goalless after 90 minutes and 1-1 after extra-time.

It was a costly defeat for the Soweto giants who not only could’ve taken home $1.25 million (R20 million) had they been crowned champions, but would’ve also been guaranteed $150 000 (R2.4 million) had they lost the CAF Super Cup – and $200 000 (R3.2 million) had they won it!

South Africa has never had a CAF Confederation Cup winner

The CAF Super Cup is a one-off match contested by the winners of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

Alas, South Africa remains without a CAF Confederation Cup winner in the 19 seasons the tournament has been contested.
