The Springbok Sevens side suffered a shocking loss to Ireland in their opening Pool D encounter at the HSBC France Sevens in Toulouse on Friday.

Ireland won 21-12 to record their first-ever win over the Blitzboks in World Rugby Sevens Series history!

The score was tied 7-7 at half-time with the Blitzboks a man down (Zain Davids) after conceding a number of penalties for ill-discipline.

The second half saw Ireland score two further converted tries to run out deserved winners.

In their second Pool D match later on Friday (18:28 SA time), South Africa will face Spain.

On Saturday, 21 May they will tackle Samoa in their final pool match (12:22 SA time).

Samoa beat Spain 42-12 in their opening pool match.

Blitzboks can’t afford to lose again

The Blitzboks, who are the current World Sevens series log leaders despite a couple of disappointing tournaments of late in which the ‘big boys’ – Fiji, New Zealand etc finally returned to action – can’t afford to lose either of those remaining matches.

SCORERS:

Tries: Mfundo Ndhlovu, Siviwe Soyizwapi

Ireland
