Windmill Casino keeps pupils in school with sanitary pad vending machine

More than 3.7 million girls in South Africa are unable to access sanitary products. This contributes to school absenteeism and the Windmill Casino in Bloemfontein is working to combat this. The casino has handed over a sanitary pad vending machine to a local school that has helped to keep 600 young girls at their desks.

LEREKO SECONDARY SCHOOL’S SANITARY PAD VENDING MACHINE

600 girls at Lereko Secondary School in Rocklands, Mangaung will receive a monthly token which they will use at the vending machine that dispenses sanitary pads.

“No girl should be missing school due to lack of access to proper sanitary products and Windmill Casino hopes that the donation of the machine will help these young women focus on their studies and not have to worry about where they will find pads,” said Windmill Casino’s General Manager, Johan Oosthuizen.

The school’s acting principal, MF Kibinye, said the donation has already improved attendance rates.

SUN INTERNATIONAL’S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME

Sun International has taken 38 schools across the country under its wing for its educational programme to integrate sustainable practices at schools in 2019.

The programme incorporates numerous sustainability elements such as social, health and safety, economic and environmental elements.

“During this time, we have seen our endeavours pay off, as pass rates have increased,” said Sun International’s Heidi Edson.

ASSISTING SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY

Sun International’s educational programme has offered three bursaries to pupils who have excelled, revamped 20 classrooms, built ablution facilities, developed a netball court, installed whiteboards and has held teacher workshops and maths classes.

“I would encourage more initiatives such as Sun International’s Adopts the School Project because an investment in education is ultimately an investment in the future of our country and the global village of which we are an integral part,” said Edson.
