Two cable theft accused sought by police – accomplices sentenced

Two men accused of Eskom copper cable theft are sought by police after they failed to appear in court.

The two are part of four men who were arrested in November 2018 when they were found red-handed, cutting a copper cable belonging to Eskom.

This took place at Ystervarkfontein in Welbekend in Tshwane.

A warrant of arrest has been issued against the two accused men, Victor Ncube and Ian Chitova.

They failed to appear before the court after they were released on bail.

“Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.

“Anyone who might have information about the whereabouts of these suspects to please call the Investigating Officer Detective Sergeant Jeffrey Selopane on 076 493 6080 or 083 436 2819,”

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo.

TWO OTHERS WERE CONVICTED AND SENTENCED

Meanwhile, police welcomed the successful conviction and sentencing of the other two men involved in the case.

Anye Valentine Nkwenti was sentenced to fifteen years direct imprisonment while Happy Dube was sentenced to twelve years direct imprisonment.

The two were both found guilty of malicious damage to essential infrastructure and possession of stolen property.

“I am pleased with the successful conviction and sentencing of the accused. This will send a strong message to those who continue to damage our essential infrastructure.

“We remain committed to fighting the scourge of copper cable theft and protection of essential infrastructure in our province,”

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela said.

He warned those who are still involved in this criminality that it is just a matter of time before they are also behind bars.

LARGE AMOUNT OF COPPER CABLES CONFISCATED

Meanwhile, in Welkom copper cable weighing 290,5 kg with an estimated street value of R31 955 was found where the suspects attempted to burn it.

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said members of Lejweleputswa District Reaction Team were on vehicle patrol at Mannys, Welkom when they noticed smoke coming from the direction of the railway line.

“The two members approached the spot from where the smoke was coming from.

“A group of men who ran away after noticing the police members and evaded arrest,”

Captain Thakeng said.

He said the destruction of infrastructure is a concern in the area and confiscating such a large quantity of copper cables is a breakthrough.
