Biden recalls eating lunch with “genuine segregationists” during his Senate days

President Joe Biden praised bipartisanship as he went to Ohio with a departing Republican senator who recently endorsed Donald Trump’s favorite candidate in the state – where he spoke of old Senate traditions in which even segregationists ate lunch with their opponents.

‘We used to fight like crazy all the time. Even in the days when we had true segregationists like Eastland, Thurmond, and the rest of them. But at least we ate lunch together,’ Biden remarked, referring to Senators James Eastland (D-Miss.) and Strom Thurmond (R-South Carolina) (R-S.C.).

Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio), a well-liked two-term Republican, was praised by Biden as “one of the good guys” for his geniality.
