Teenager arrested for Pedrie Wannenburg fatal car accident [Update]

Wannenburg was killed in a horrific accident in Houston, America, on Friday. His family was with him at the time of the accident.

It is believed the family was on their way to the movies when the accident happened. Wannenburg got caught up in a high-speed chase of the teenager who was evading the police.

The Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed the arrest of the teenager on Sunday.

WHAT CHARGES DOES THE TEENAGER FACE?

The teenager has been charged with felony murder, reckless and aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, and aggravated assault causing bodily harm.

The teenager had two friends with him in the car.

“His two passengers, also 16 yrs of age, sustained non-life-threatening injuries,” Gonzalez said.

Wannenburg’s 8-year-old son Pedrie is in critical condition in hospital, while his sister Isabelle and wife Evette escaped serious injuries.

A family member on Sunday said while is still in a critical condition in hospital he is stable and that no information was currently available on Evette and Isabelle.

HERE IS WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE CHASE:

• The chase started at about 5:45 p.m. at Greenhouse Road and West Little York. Investigators said a deputy attempted to pull the teenagers over, for reasons unknown, but the driver sped off and led the deputy on a chase that reached speeds over 100 mph.
• The chase ended near the intersection of Greenhouse Road and Kieth Harrow Boulevard.
• Deputies said the suspect crashed into the back of the father’s vehicle and went airborne. The suspect’s vehicle then crashed into a second vehicle with multiple people inside.
• The father (Wannenburg) and one of the children in his vehicle were flown to the hospital. The father was later pronounced dead.
• Two people in the second vehicle were taken to the hospital for their injuries.
• The suspect’s two passengers were also taken to nearby hospitals.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE IN MEMORY OF WANNENBURG:

The Bulls held a moment of silence ahead of their United Rugby Championship (URC) match against Benetton on Saturday in memory of Wannenburg.

Wannenburg was an instrumental member of the Bulls team between 2002 and 2010 where he amassed over 100 Super Rugby caps for the Pretoria union.
